An Exhibition about the history of Roatan can be found on the second floor of the Buccaneer. It was developed in cooperation with the Honduran Institute of History and Anthropology.
We invite you to undertake a journey through the history of the Bay Islands in general and of Roatan in particular, with a history that spans over 1500 years of human presence in the archipelago, in which are depicted the first settlements in 600 BC, followed by the arrival of Christopher Columbus at Guanaja and the subsequent interactions of the indigenous population by the Spanish until the English finally settled the island. You will also learn of the permanent presence of pirates and buccaneers that the Spanish had to combat in the Caribbean, in Roatan among other places, especially in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. You will also learn of the almost permanent state of war under which Spain and England lived during these same centuries, and of the dominance of colonial trade.
Discover this and more about the history that created Roatan.
